The Lightning used a revolutionary tricycle landing gear.  Prior planes had two wheels under the wings and a third under the tail.  The Lightning placed the third wheel under the nose.

Here you can see the compartment for the landing gear under the wing. The gear is retracted here and enclose by the doors on either side. The engine is above and forward of this area.
